The Importance Of Quality Pool Salt

Making the right choice on the type of salt you use in your swimming pool is critical in how well your pool will maintain its water chemistry and how long your salt chlorinator will last. This article will help you understand pool salt, why and how it is used and the effects it has on your pool and equipment, as well as highlighting the importance of using a quality pool salt.

Why is pool salt required in my pool?

Saltwater Chlorinators use an electrolytic cell to sanitise your swimming pool. By adding the required amount of salt (sodium chloride) to your pool water, the cell converts the chloride contained in the saltwater into chlorine, which in turn sanitises your pool. Pool owners in the 21st century are converting to salt water pools because of the low maintenance and higher water quality.

How much salt should I put in my swimming pool?

The amount of salt needed varies depending on the type/ brand of chlorinator. Most models require salt solutions of between 0.3% to 0.7% (3000ppm to 7000ppm) to effectively chlorinate a pool or spa, while some newer models can operate at levels as low as 900ppm. It is important to keep your salt levels in range, as operating your salt chlorinator with too little or too much pool salt can cause irreversible damage to your chlorinator cell.

What type of salt should I use for my swimming pool?

Making the right choice on the type of salt you use is critical in how well your pool will maintain its water chemistry and the longevity of your salt chlorinator.

You should use pool salt that’s 95% pure or more, as the higher purity makes it much less likely to stain the pool or damage the equipment. Not all pool salt is equal – so when comparing prices be sure to also compare quality! Salt that is high in purity will give you the least amount of trouble.

Salt with more impurities will increase the amount of trouble you have with your pool and your chlorinator cell. Salt with high impurities dissolves much slower than a pure salt. The organic matter in less pure pool salt is what we in the industry call impurity. This means the salt chlorinator has to work harder to create chlorine to eliminate the organic matter/ impurity. You may have high chlorine levels in the pool—just not free chlorine. And free chlorine is what kills the bacteria that exist in the water. Most of the above will not affect the cleanliness of the water but will instead affect the water balance. It can also affect your chlorinator cell and cause staining to your pool.

Your best bet when purchasing salt is to get it directly from a pool store. Although it may cost a few more dollars per bag, it’s well worth it when you consider the long-term benefits, and the dollars you will save in getting longer life out of your pool equipment.

What is the best way to apply pool salt?

We recommend having your pool water tested by a pool professional, remember it is free to test your pool water at Aura Pool Shop. You should first balance your pool water before putting pool salt in, pour salt in the deep end and brush salt thoroughly to dissolve the salt quickly. We recommend removing pool suction cleaners from the pool when applying products. To extend your salt cell’s lifespan, only clean the cell when necessary.
